My first exposure to anime was in the 70's. I was probably 7 or 8 that time when I first watched Candy Candy. I don't even remember the stories so I watched some clips again today. It's a story of three orphans: Candy, Annie and Tom who grew up in Pony's Home, an old church cared by two nuns, Sister Pony and Sister Lane. I've always had a fondness for stories about orphans--Penny of Disney's The Rescuers, Little Orphan Annie, Oliver! I believe it has influenced me a lot on what I wanted to do later in life which is work with underprivileged children.
And so for today's blog, I just wanted to thank the Japanese animators and manga writers for sharing Candy Candy to the world. Check out this video clip from YouTube of episode 1/2. It's in Japanese sub-titled in English. I personally thank Fofiko1 for uploading all 115 episodes of Candy Candy. Arigatou gozaimasu!

The Beginning of the Obsession
I'm trying to recall when it all started--this Japanese obsession of mine. October 2009 was when I started seriously studying the language but I guess it was when I 'fell in love' with Matsumoto Jun in Hana Yori Dango. I watched the whole series in AZNV and then I went from watching doramas to watching animes and then to learning the language. Thanks to Livemocha I could do that for free. Now, after spending hundreds of hours watching and studying the language, I am not sure I'll be able to stop anytime soon. As for my obsessions (addictions), they come and go. I remember being so absorbed in computer games before (The Sims, Rise of Nations, Warcraft III, Harry Potter - Order of Phoenix, Need for Speed). The incessant need to win is unbelievable. I also spent hours in Facebook and Photoshop.
I know a lot of people would call this not healthy but for me it has been my way of relaxing. After spending time being alone in my 'own world' I'm able to give back and spend undivided time with others.
So this blog is dedicated to everyone who shares the same passion as me--Japan! By the way, I've never been there but am dreaming of visiting one day soon. Will share my thoughts on some of my fav doramas in the coming posts. For now, I'll leave you with one of my favorite lines in Hana Yori Dango:
"You know, when you cut a fig in half, it looks like a heart. That's why they say it's bittersweetness is the flavor of love. But to me, the flavor of love tastes like the lousy cookie you made."
- Domyoji Tsukasa to Makino Tsukushi
